As she deftly weaved through cars and avoided other passers-by, Amber suddenly realised that she had sailed close to the wind.

Today had been fully intense; running on a couple of hours sleep and feeling the worse for wear. Amber was really starting to be affected by her ever increasing responsibilities and she was feeling immensely overwhelmed.

Trying to pace herself and failing, she was forced to pause when she finally understood why some folk would consider and choose to commit suicide. Sometimes, life just gets too much and you find yourself quite unable to breathe. Today, Amber had found herself unable to breathe.

She had determined early on that she’d battle through regardless, take it all in her stride, no retreat, no surrender but then the harder she swam as she tried to brave the currents, the bigger the mean cold currents seemed to get and the longer she stood her ground, the louder the waves got until just in time, she reminded herself that there was absolutely no shame in admitting and accepting defeat.

She would stand down, for the sake of her sanity. And that was what did it, she reminded herself that she too mattered. Fighting hard not to let all these folk who were counting on her down, she had let herself be pushed to the brink and had almost let herself down.

After all said and done, why persist when the rock refused to budge? Sometimes, maybe just maybe the rock shouldn’t be moved, yet. And so, she dispelled all negative thoughts and chose to tackle her responsibilities a different way.

Back to the drawing board. Oh no, she wouldn’t give up, God no! She would simply take a much needed step back, re-adjust her perspective and try again.

Almost instantly, she felt better, able to breathe again and how good that felt. She bowed her head for a second and said thank You. He knew what she meant and that was all that mattered.

Fingers crossed, she picked up her mobile phone and placed the one phonecall that she had been dreading all day.

Amber found that once her mind was made up, she no longer felt afraid and with the absence of fear came a wholeness of mind.

The conversation went better than expected and even though there was some shouting and even one or two threats thrown her way, she also found that once she had stopped stressing, she was quite able to stay calm in the face of aggravation. Suddenly she did see a way out of the situation. Focusing on the main points and refusing to panic, she instinctively knew how to successfully address the situation.

Next, she set about bringing her ideas to play. Reaching within, she asked herself, what had she missed? Why had she failed to surmount these challenges on the first try? What ought she to do differently? “She who asks questions, never misses her way” or so she’d been told a million times.

And so, Amber would retrace her steps in a bid to find her way; oh she might have missed a marker or two but she would find them again and ultimately learn that it is okay to fail as long as you don’t stay a failure.
